I’m Velez Moore, I’m curating a Spoken Word&Jazz series in Ft. Greene Park in Bklyn from June 30-August 4. I’d like to invite you to perform your poetry/spoken word w/jazz musical accompaniment. At this time, we are in discussion with jazz musicians to accompany you.
It is an outdoor performance on Thursday nights from 6:15p-8:00p. If you have a musician(s) in mind, please note that there’s no piano, so a keyboard would have to be brought in by the musician. Please let me know before April 30th if you’d like to be a part of this Series.
Thanks & peace–
Good Morning,
My name is Toni Cross, and I am currently a 6th grade history teacher at Hathaway Brown School, a EC-12 girls’ independent school in Cleveland, Ohio. After lamenting on my increasingly desperate search to find a speaker for our February cultural celebration/school year theme of “Women Who Rock.”
My deepest hopes would be that Ms. Betts would accept our invitation to visit our school and share her talent with our middle school girls (grades 5-8) on February 1st, 2011 (which is also my birthday). The day’s schedule is flexible, upon her acceptance.
I sincerely hope to hear from you soon (with good news)!
With much regard,
Ms. Toni Cross
Hi, my name is Rachel. I am an 8th grade student at The Davis Academy in Atlanta, Georgia. I am doing a yearlong independent research project called Siyyum, which is based upon a driving essential question regarding a passion or interest of mine. Siyyum is “designed to be the culmination of each student’s academic experience that allows for engagement in thoughtful and active learning which merges their various interests, passions, and curiosities with their academic curricula and experiences at school.”
My project focuses on the art of poetry, and my goal is to share my passion for poetry with other teen girls my age. I believe, (and I am sure you do too) that writing is not limited to school; it is much more fun than that! I know that poetry has the power to mend a broken heart, brighten up a day, and help us overcome even the toughest of obstacles, but only if we let it. I am attempting to open girls’ minds to writing and poetry, for it has helped me navigate my teenage years and I am sure it can do the same for others. To help me with my project, I am looking for a dignitary in the poetry community to guide me as I attempt to propagate the beautiful art of writing and encourage other young women to find and share their voices with a global community. I would be honored if you would mentor me along my journey. If you could give me a few quick suggestions on how to make poetry appeal to teens, it would be very much appreciated and put to good use!
Thank you so much for your time and guidance,
Rachel Kaufman
These are some questions I am interested in finding out about for my project. It would truly benefit me to receive a couple of answers.
1. How can I make writing appeal to teenagers?
2. How does poetry help people overcome obstacles?
3. How can people unite through writing?
